The ridge has its own calendar.

Dogwoods in April. River days in June. Copper hills in October. A warm stove when the frost comes.

A few ways to spend a day.

A day on the Buffalo

25 minutes to Ponca

Start early, pack lunch and ask an outfitter about the river level. Spring is usually the best time for an upper-river float.

Boots on, phone away

45 minutes to the trailhead

Hawksbill Crag rewards an early start. Take water, stay back from the edge and leave the trail as you found it.

The valley wakes up

30 minutes to Boxley Valley

Head down around sunrise or the last hour of daylight. Watch from a safe pull-off and give the elk room.

Supper in Jasper

15 minutes to the square

A plate of comfort food, a walk around the square, then back up the ridge before the stars come out.

Good people down the road.
